Howdy y’all! I know it’s been quite some time since I checked in and well today seemed to be as good a day as any I suppose. It’s been an adventurous few weeks here on the compound to say the least!
Today just happened to be the icing on the cake after the girls survived an enthusiastic game of chase with the neighbors dog and the replacement bed parts I have been waiting on since April arrived for it to only be a full rather than king…just my luck right?! It does get better because the day started off with my super smart three year old knowing everything and especially more than me when she decided to wear a skirt that was a few sizes too big to story-time at the library. She only pulled it up every 5 seconds and finally found it around her ankles as she ran through the library to the playground and I along with a few others I’m sure saw the cutest little coppertone cheeks one has ever seen🤦🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️. Maybe next time I could impart some of the wisdom I have gained over the last 36 yrs on her, but I’m betting not since she seems to have already been there, done and seen that bigger and better than this momma could imagine.
Anyway, a few weeks back we had a lightening strike and all the chaos ignited from there…the sprinkler controller panel took the main hit and of course I ran out to the main water shut off system like the complete crazy person I am in the middle of a lightening storm to shut the water off…at least I’m here to tell about it and I didn’t even 💩 my pants as lightening struck all around me…1 positive with a negative cancels it out right?!?!
Now, just the rain and lightening, would have been enough, but no, it didn’t stop there…we have been telling Miss K for weeks not to go LOVE on the hens because Mister Rooster is a little protective of his girls…again does she listen or does she have an excuse as to why she was LOVING more like CHASING the hens…well I will assume not, as I here screaming and see the Rooster attacking my sweet angel 🙄 over and over…luckily she only suffered some minor ego bruising and a few scratches…the lesson learned PRICELESS!! Now while that was happening an owl decided to swoop in for a little dessert and enjoyed the sweet delicacy of my favorite hens head and left her big fat body for me to explain to my 3 yr old why she didn’t have a head! Seriously, you can’t make it up and now my daughter knows owls 🦉 enjoy chickens just like she enjoys coconut milk peach ice cream. I mean what else can you say right?!? I only wish that had been the end of the day, but we had a visitor 🐍 who was looking for something to eat that night and I’ll just say scared the daylights out of me as I opened the coop to check for eggs when I put our remaining friends in for the night…luckily he didn’t eat our golden eggs and my neighbor came to handle the situation for me.
And now for the grand finale, I saved the best for last! Super K went flying down the driveway showing off her mad racing skills on her plasma car only to be greeted by the rear bumper of daddy’s truck. As she climbs out, blood had sprayed the concrete and of course I couldn’t see the damage but I knew we were headed to the ER. The urgency somehow escaped my dear husband as he sat trying to console my over dramatic, attention loving, toddler for not 10 or 20 minutes…a whole 45minutes!! Seriously, remind me when I have a life/death emergency to call the neighbors because urgency must have different meaning than “GET YOUR ASS MOVING NOW”! Anyway, we got a little glue after we shelled out some money only to have the princess peel the glue off 24hrs later. Note to self, use superglue at home next time it’s only $1.49 plus tax!
I hope y’all are having a wonderful week and enjoy the video a friend of mine sent me below because heaven knows we all need a good laugh sometimes! If you know a momma who needs a good laugh, popsugar has a gift list for moms with potty mouths…it just happens sometimes ladies!
Good Morning! I just wanted to give everyone a little smile this morning and a hello from the girls! We are enjoying some much needed rain here in South Central Texas…I LOVE rainy days especially since they have been few and far between lately.
We have enjoyed a little bit of splashing/running in the rain this morning before becoming so wet the water dripped from our noses down to our toeses and we needed to go in to dry off. Then Miss K and Zeiss aka her best friend who may not have the same viewpoint…have been having tea parties, slumber parties and storytime together. He was all but forced into her room as the door shut and was promptly locked so he could not get out…poor guy always gets roped into these things but I know he enjoys MOST of it. We also took the time to enjoy a few games of connect four, operation and break the ice since going outside might melt us with all this sugar we’re made out of!🤣
We also finally got our Buffy to lay in the nesting boxes…whoohooo!!! It only took two days of keeping them cooped until lunchtime and putting her in with our other layer. I was so happy and relieved especially since I was feeling awful about having to keep them cooped up. Seriously, I had to totally vacate the compound the last few days so I wouldn’t let them out until after lunch…I may have a soft spot for my chickens or just be a crazy chicken lady 🐔🤷🏼♀️.
Today was an incredibly busy and productive day as I had product to make for my dear friends at Sisters, entertain an incredibly busy toddler, as well as train our big fat Buffy to lay her eggs in the appropriate space!
With all of these things to do, I had to start the day out with some caffeine! Lately, my go to has been cold brew and almond milk with a splash of maple syrup and scoop of vital proteins. Gives me the boost I need with some protein for these busy days 😬.
Once I had Miss K her protein smoothie and other goodies served, I made my way down to the coop to check on the girls and gather the eggs…I had decided to leave everyone cooped to try and get Buffy to lay in the nesting boxes rather than the flowerbed. Well about 9am I started to feel bad that everyone was having to stay inside the coop so I allowed all of the girls except her to go out to free range, well I didn’t imagine the chaos that would ensue…Mister Rooster was all bent out of shape as he ran from the garden area back down to the coop a million and one times because the Buffy was all kinds of ticked off. Well I finally decided about noon to go let her out after checking in on them several times without any egg layed. Let me just say when I opened that coop she darted up the hill to the front yard and into the flowerbed so fast, I was afraid an egg was gonna pop out at anytime. I have never laughed so hard before or seen a chicken move so fast! Needless to say she went right back to her previous spot and layed me a beautiful tan egg.
it wasn’t long after this, it was time for lunch followed by nap. In this house, nap time is the best time and today it was certainly necessary for all of us! I decided to open Miss Ks door after about an hour and a half and as I walked away I heard, “No, nap-time is not over mommy, shut my door, I’m trying to sleep!” I promptly shut that door to which I was greeted only a minute later with, “can we go swimming now?” Of course we did and as we headed out, Zeiss needed to potty, so he found a nice tree and Miss K said, “I think he’s holding on to the tree while he potty’s because he has to go outside instead of on the potty.” Of course this had to be one of the most innocent, creative and hilarious things I may have heard, but I just replied, “yes I think you’re right sweetheart” and we continued to the pool. Our pool time didn’t disappoint either as we found a locust, a snake 🐍 swimming in the pool…yes a snake came to visit and Miss K tried to coax Mr. Steve in by having Mister Crab pinch him.
We swam a bit later than I had planned so when got back, I spiralized and sautéed some zucchini and yellow squash from the garden as the spaghetti sauce was simmering.
What are some quick meals you put together when you are short on time?
Good Afternoon! I hope you all are staying cool or enjoying some cool weather where you’re at because it is quite warm and thick outside today in Texas.
Miss K typically has dance class on Wednesdays but todays class was rescheduled, so we enjoyed a nice day on the homestead. Well, we really spent two hours in snake books searching for our Buffy who started disappearing periodically on Sunday for a few hours each day…I knew she was close/should be laying anytime, so I needed to find where she was hiding out. Well, of course, I traipsed through the brush/weeds etc in my boxers, camisole and snake boots only to find her 2 hrs later in the front yard. Now, I had searched the front yard and flower beds a million times, but I guess it was that last time as several cars drove past I would find the “nest” in my Sunday best! Now I’m hoping maybe leaving the girls cooped for the next several days will help her to lay them in the nesting boxes rather than the flower beds as I don’t need any snakes coming up for a little afternoon/evening snack. Do any of you have any ideas on how to get her to lay in the nesting boxes?
Anyway, yesterday, we tried to take our friend Miss Lauren paddle boarding, but mother nature was not having any of it, as the winds gusted over the lake and small whitecaps formed. We were a bit bummed, but being strong willed individuals we weren’t about to let the day waste away, so we settled for having a fun morning at Yanaguana Garden where we played chess, checkers, foosball, connect four, and enjoyed the splash pad and playground. It is located downtown at the corner of Cesar Chavez and South Alamo and has a coffee and juice bar, popsicle shop and newly opened pizzeria.
From the Garden, we decided to go have a bit of lunch at Rosarios off South Alamo, and let me just say as a first time Momma, sometimes just sometimes, you may want to watch what you say as you drive looking for an open parking space just as the Hanger starts in. A combination of small parking lots along with folks continuously going the wrong way led this hangry momma to utter the phrase “seriously you idiot” Now i wasn’t thinking my keen as a cat toddler was listening so intently in the seat directly behind me as she uttered “mommy, did you just call them an idiot?” Now Lauren and I busted out laughing, and of course I had to fess up to the current situation and say yes as the questions continued to roll out regarding the comment. Sometimes these funny episodes are good reminders to always be aware of the words flowing from our mouths, or at least this mommas. We finally found a spot and had a delicious lunch and walked across the street to Steel City Pops (all natural popsicles with a large dairy/soy free selection) to enjoy some healthy treats before heading back to the compound for a much needed nap!
Where/what is your favorite summer hangout/park/activity?
Hey there!! Today we have some exciting news…we have our first egg! After 4 months of caring for our girls we have seen our chicks grow into as Miss K calls them, BIG FAT HENS who are officially laying eggs. I will have to say I was so eggstatic to find the egg in the nesting box this morning while cleaning the coop. Luckily Miss K was helping so she and I both shared in the immediate joy of seeing the egg and promptly ran up to the house to let daddy join in the excitement. These small moments are incredibly rewarding as a mom to see the tiniest of things bring so much happiness and create wonderful family memories. Today was definitely a happy day among the many we have already shared and the many more to come.
